What is the Street Works 5-Day Course?

The Street Works (NRSWA) 5-Day Course is designed for operatives and supervisors who need to carry out works on the highway. This training ensures you’re compliant with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and covers a wide range of practical skills, from signing and guarding to reinstating footpaths and roadways.

Who is It For?

  • Operatives: Those who carry out the actual work on site (digging, reinstating, etc.)
  • Supervisors: Those who oversee the works and ensure everything is done safely and to standard

 

The course is split into Operative Units or Supervisor Units, so it’s worth knowing which role you’re training for before arrival.

Before You Arrive – What You Need to Bring

  • Safety boots
  • High-visibility jacket or vest
  • Gloves
  • Hard hat
  • EN166B goggles
  • FFP3 mask and ear defenders 

 

What to Expect During the Course

 

Over the 5 days, you’ll cover a combination of classroom theory and practical exercises. Topics include:

 

  • Unit 01: Signing, lighting and guarding (essential for everyone)
  • Unit 02: Excavation in the highway
  • Unit 03: Reinstatement of compaction materials
  • Unit 04: Reinstatement of bituminous materials
  • Plus relevant supervisor units if you’re on the Supervisor track

 

Assessments include written questions and practical demonstrations.

 

Top Tips to Get the Most Out of the Course

 

💡 Do you homework - It's important, especially for those that don't have a lot of prior Street Works or construction exerience. Doing some reading ahead of time will really help you with understanding the terminology when it comes to the online test.

💡 Arrive Early – This course starts at 8am sharp. Anyone arriving after this will be turned away due to the awarding bodies strict ruling. 

💡 Ask Questions – The trainers are industry experts. Make the most of their knowledge.

💡 Stay Engaged – The more you put in, the more you’ll take away.

💡 Revise in the Evenings – Especially useful for theory-heavy days. If you have supporting literature, then please take the time to read it - it's worth it!

💡 Look After Your PPE – It’s your responsibility and it must be worn correctly on all practical sessions.
